Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines is Acting Education Minister

There are now three female Ministers of Government in the Virgin Islands, with Sixth District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines currently performing duties as Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture.

According to the Instrument of Appointment signed by Governor John J. Rankin CMG on February 25, 2022, Hon Maduro-Caines will perform the functions as Minister from February 27-March 4, 2022, due to substantive holder of the post Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) being unable to perform his duties during that period.

“NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of section 52 (2) of the said Constitution read together with section 4 (1) of the said Constitution, and all other powers me thereunto enabling, I, JOHN RANKIN, CMG, Governor of the Virgin Islands, acting in accordance with the advice of the Premier, DO by this instrument under the Public Seal appoint you, HONOURABLE ALVERA MADURO-CAINES, to perform the functions of the Minister responsible for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture from 27th February 2022 to 4th March 2022,” a section of the Instrument of Appointment stated.

All three females of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) are now holding ministerial portfolios, albeit temporarily.

The other female ministers of government are Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles (AL) and Junior Minister for Tourism Hon Sharie B. DeCastro (AL).
