This was revealed by Dr Wheatley at the continuation of the 7th Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.
And, according to Dr Wheatley, items to be discussed include constitutional development, sanctions, economic management, climate change and other environmental matters.
“Of course, I will be advancing the interest of the Virgin Islands and raising issues of interest and concern…A key diplomatic objective of the Government of National Unity is to build a new modern partnership with the UK that supports the aspirations of the people of the Virgin Islands.”
According to the Premier, the Order in Council to suspend the Virgin Islands constitution will be discussed with the Minister of State for the Americas and Overseas Territories, Mr Alexander Jesse Norman.
Dr Wheatley said the Order in Council is not consistent with a modern partnership based on trust and mutual respect nor does it support the aspirations of the people of the Virgin Islands.
“We want a genuine partnership with the United Kingdom, not one that is held back by coercion. I am confident that we can build a modern partnership but both sides must act in good faith and be true to democracy.”
Premier Wheatley said he looks forward to updating the HoA on the progress of the discussions and any other developments concerning the UK.
