‘I envision Paraquita Bay to be a mini zoo’ - Bevin S. George

Political activist and co-host of the National Democratic Party (NDP) radio show, NDP Radio, Mr Bevin S. George has proposed radical agricultural development for the Paraquita Bay area and for Agriculture week in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Mr George, who in February 2022, indicated that he intends to run for a seat in the Seventh District, said that he has always envisioned the Paraquita Bay area to be a full-time agriculture area, that can also work as a zoo.

More for Agriculture Month

“In my mind, I always think that we can do more in the agriculture fair. I don’t know if we can do it more than just once a year [or] quarterly,” he added.

Mr George was at the time speaking on the Monday, April 4, 2022, edition of the NDP radio show on ZBVI 780 AM.

“I always had a vision of having Paraquita Bay turn into something like a mini zoo… you can create like a farmers market, so it will be like an all-year-round farmers market, farmers come you build a proper structure,” he added.

Mr George said that the facility would encourage agricultural businesses and also attract tourists to see the animals.

“Tourism would be able to come, the cruise ship passengers could go there and maybe you have like different restaurants with local produce from the restaurant,” he added.

Plants more crop varieties - Geroge

George said that is just one way for the VI to do more in the agriculture sector, with more diversification in products that can come through research.

“Everybody growing the same thing, we can’t get everybody just growing cucumber… everybody at the side of the road selling cucumber, everybody selling Okro. Where is the potato, where is the plantain?” he questioned.

Mr George said like everything, there needs to be more industry planning and structure if the government is serious about the sector.

“They need to really get serious and pump the money,” in the sector he added, rather than playing politics.

Mr George was at the time speaking on the Monday, April 4, 2022, edition of the NDP radio show on ZBVI 750am radio.
