‘I have officers who exceed even my expectations’- CoP Matthews

The outstanding achievements of officers and members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) were celebrated at a luncheon hosted in their honour by Commissioner of Police Michael B. Matthews last Thursday, November 26, 2020.
With His Excellency the Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert, Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr and Deputy Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) in attendance, a total of 112 RVIPF officers and staff as well as officers of Joint Task Force, Customs and Immigration were presented with one of four awards for their exemplary achievements during the years 2019 and 2020, according to a press release from the RVIPF today, December 1, 2020.

All three of the honoured guests, according to the press release, expressed their appreciation and support to the officers for the hard work, many times challenging efforts to keep the community safe.

The officers received awards for exemplary policing, meritorious conduct, certificates of commendation and leadership. Supervisors nominated officers that excelled in the areas of public responsiveness and sensitivity, recovery of illegal firearms and related items, seizure of drugs and illegal cash, arrest and apprehension of dangerous criminals, consistent work ethics and going beyond the call of duty.

Mr Matthews noted his delight at hosting this event and showing appreciation to his officers for their exceptional work in one of the toughest years on record.

“I have officers who exceed even my expectations to bring about an arrest, confiscate illegal items and aid a member of the public, some in one night. However, because of the nature of this profession, these officers can never be publicly celebrated. Today, our esteemed officials and colleagues in the profession can get to see and appreciate this work,” the Commissioner said.
