Imprisoned Russian Opposition Figure Ilya Yashin Pledges to Fight On Despite Navalny's Death

Ilya Yashin, the incarcerated Russian opposition leader, promised to persist in his struggle for Russian democracy following the death of his fellow dissident Alexei Navalny in custody.
Navalny's passing, recognized as Vladimir Putin’s most significant adversary, sparked international condemnation and concern for other jailed dissidents in Russia. Communicating via his lawyer on social media, Yashin declared, "I will resist tyranny with all that I am."

In December 2022, Yashin was sentenced to eight years for allegedly disseminating misleading information about Russia’s military, an act now criminalized due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Acknowledging the hazards he faces, Yashin, an associate of both Navalny and the murdered opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, expressed resolution from prison, stating his life is under threat.

Yashin, who learned of Navalny's death in his jail near Smolensk, openly blamed the Kremlin, criticizing Putin's concept of power through violence and intimidation.

The Kremlin has remained silent on the issue, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov not revealing Putin's reaction and noting that an investigation into Navalny's death is still underway.
