India presses Google over AI's 'fascist Modi' comment

India's junior minister claims Google breached the nation's IT laws with inappropriate AI responses

Google faced backlash from the Indian government after its Gemini AI depicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies as 'fascist.' Journalist Arnab Ray asked the AI if Modi was a fascist and received a reply citing expert opinions labeling Modi's policies fascist due to the ruling party's nationalist stance, suppression of dissent, and violence against minorities.
Ray compared responses by asking about Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskiy, receiving non-committal replies. Media uproar over Modi's response led IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar to accuse Google of breaking Indian IT laws, insisting AI platforms comply with regulations.

Google acknowledged the issue and is refining the system, noting the AI's limitations with certain topics. Meanwhile, the government had mandated the removal of posts backing protesting farmers, accentuating tensions between Indian authorities and tech companies over content deemed ‘anti-Indian.’
