Inmate who escaped during hurricane recaptured after 4 years

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has confirmed that they’ve now recaptured Jose Almestica who has been on the run since September 2017 when he escaped Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut.
In a press release statement, the police said: “The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force yesterday arrested and charged Jose Almestica, 33, for escaping lawful custody. Jose Almestica escaped from Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut in 2017 during the passage of Hurricane Irma. He was arrested in 2016 for illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and illegal entry. He was on remand for these offences prior to his escape.”

“Investigations are ongoing, therefore no further information can be released at this time,” the RVIPF added.

The confirmation of Almestica’s arrest comes after reports emerged that the police conducted a raid on a local apartment occupied by a man who was wanted by the RVIPF for years.

With Almestica now in police custody, he is expected to serve time for the crime for which he was convicted. He’ll also be made to answer to any additional charges the police decides to bring against him.

There was an active warrant out for the arrest of Almestica at all ports of entry as he was convicted in October of this year for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
