Institute bans use of Playboy test image in engineering journals
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has prohibited the use of a Playboy image of Lena Forsén in academic journals, citing it as a breach of ethics.
This image, a cropped version of a 1972 Playboy centerfold, became an essential test photo for engineering since the 1970s for its technical qualities.
However, its use has been criticized for not aligning with efforts to promote inclusivity and gender equity in science and engineering fields. The IEEE's decision follows similar actions by other organizations, including Nature in 2018.
The move respects Forsén's wishes and aims to foster a more inclusive culture in technical communities. Forsén herself has expressed support for retiring the image from technical use, highlighting the need for positive change in the industry.
