Is Nuclear Power Making a Comeback?
Listen
A Resurgence Amid Energy Security and Climate Concerns
A decade ago, nuclear power was seemingly on the decline due to safety concerns and financial costs.
Disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima raised public fears, while countries like Germany began phasing out nuclear energy.
However, nations such as China have continued to expand their nuclear capabilities, and interest in nuclear power is resurging in the West.
Tech companies, facing the need for reliable energy to power data centers, are investing in nuclear technology.
Meanwhile, the US, UK, France, and others pledged at Cop29 in Azerbaijan to increase nuclear power as a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
South Korea abandoned plans to phase out nuclear plants, and France announced plans for new reactors.
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are gaining attention for their potential to lower costs and enhance safety.
Nevertheless, the problem of radioactive waste disposal persists, with only Finland having established a deep geological storage facility.
As nuclear power faces both optimism and skepticism, its future will depend on addressing these enduring challenges.
