Jovan C. Wilson ousted from 284 Media; Termination reasons unknown!

284 Media, an affiliate of Caribbean Cellular Telephone Ltd., (CCT Global Communication), has fired its main reporter, Jovan C. Wilson, according to information reaching our news centre earlier this week.

Ms Wilson, who has been with the company for over three years plus and had been the face of its 284 Media platform, was given a termination letter on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, a letter obtained by this news site.

No reason was given for her termination and it is unclear if she received severance payment.

There has been widespread speculation in the media fraternity over her firing, with some believing she was too close to the ruling Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government and was reporting too often on the many accomplishments of the Andrew A. Fahie (R1) nearly three-year-old Administration.

Others claimed it was a clash of personalities between her and her co-host Ronn A. Grant on the media platform 284 News.

Wilson, seen as a role model for young women in the VI, was especially known for her interviewing skills on live platforms.

One of her popular interviews was with ex-governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert back in September 2020, when he controversially stated that paying reparations to the Virgin Islands (VI) for acts of slavery and the slave trade is not the position of the United Kingdom at the moment, hinting that the VI should expect nothing.

In that same interview, Mr Jaspert, who ended up calling a Commission of Inquiry on governence in the VI, offended many when he said he supported the preservation of the names of landmarks named after the very people, like Sir Francis Drake, who inflicted decades of harm and suffering on the ancestors of Virgin Islanders and other Caribbean people.

284 Media known for fake news


Over the past years, the 284 Media outlet has been called out by other media houses, elected officials in the House of Assembly, residents on Facebook and other social media platforms, for many misleading and inaccurate stories published.

It is believed that Ms Wilson was tasked with correcting many of the erroneous articles posted on the news platform.

Ms Wilson declined to comment when contacted by our newsroom and only said she has retained an attorney.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of CCT, Romney Averad Penn, did not respond to VINO's request for a comment on the firing of Ms Wilson.
