Legislators pay tribute, condolences on passing of Prince Phillip

Legislators in the House of Assembly (HoA) are paying tribute to the late Duke of Edinburg, Prince Phillip, who died on April 9, 2021 at age 99.

The request for tribute to be given in the House was first made by Fourth District Representative Hon Mark H. Vanterpool and supported by veteran legislator Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) at the Seventh Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands being held at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola.

Several legislators are also dressed in black as a symbol of mourning on Prince Phillip’s passing.

Prince Phillip visited the VI in 1966, 1977 and 1993.

‘Territory is part of the monarchy’- Hon Vanterpool


Hon Vanterpool, who said he was privileged to meet Prince Phillip when he visited the Virgin Islands in 1993 and One Mart also had the honour of provisioning his yacht.

According to Hon Vanterpool, the territory is part of the monarchy, and the Queen’s husband has passed and “today we express condolences to his family, the Commonwealth and the United Kingdom of which we are a part of.”

“Sometimes people misunderstand us when we get up and say we would like to get self-determination for ourselves as a people. Some see it as disrespect and are not a part of it, but we do respect protocols and our position as we are now constitutionally,” Hon Vanterpool said.

The late Prince Phillip, The Queen's husband, visited the Virgin Islands in 1966, 1977 and 1993.


‘We are all loyal to the crown’- Hon Fraser


Hon Fraser said the Virgin Islands is loyal to the crown despite its interest in self-determination.

“We are all loyal to the crown, never mind our request for self-determination, we are all loyal to the crown,” Hon Fraser said as gave his recollection of the visits of the Queen and Prince Phillip to the Virgin Islands.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) also extended his condolences to the family of Prince Phillip and thanked the members of the House to allow for respects to be paid to Prince Phillip in the HoA.

Meanwhile, the funeral for Prince Phillip will be held on April 17, 2021.
