Lester B. Bird ‘cemented’ Antigua’s historical relationship with VI- Premier Fahie

Latest Virgin Islands (BVI) The late former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Lester B. Bird has been hailed by Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) as a political giant in the Caribbean and one who maintained his country’s close relationship with the Virgin Islands (VI). on local community, politics, finance/business, culture and sports.

The Office of the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda announced that Bird, one of the country’s most distinguished and heroic sons, died at 6:00 am on Monday, August 9, 2021, at the age of 83.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Lester Bird KHN, MP,” Premier Fahie stated on Monday, adding that Sir Lester served as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 1994 to 2004 and held several other ministerial posts over the course of his 38 years as parliamentarian and politician.

Sir Lester Bryant Bird was the second prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda who served from 1994 to 2004, and he was also a well-recognized athlete.


‘Caribbean has lost a political giant’


“Sir Lester made tremendous contributions to the development of Antigua and Barbuda during his long and distinguished career and cemented the country’s historical relationship with the British Virgin Islands that remains a close and friendly neighbour.

“The people of Antigua and Barbuda have lost a great son and National Hero and the Caribbean has lost a political giant,” Premier Fahie stated.

On behalf of the Government and people of the British Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Premier extended sincere condolences to the family of the late Prime Minister and to the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

“I pray that God will give them strength and comfort during this difficult time,” Hon Fahie said.
