Missing in action! Unexplained absence from Vanterpool at Opposition events

There has been an unexplained absence surrounding Fourth District Representative Mark Vanterpool who’s been noticeably missing from recent public briefings with the parliamentary opposition.

Vanterpool, who is known for being outspoken on topical issues in the territory, was last seen seated at an Opposition press briefing on March 16.

This pre-dates the territory’s first 24-hour lockdown.

Since then, Vanterpool has been the only member from the parliamentary opposition to be absent during the other two media conferences on May 19 and August 26. He was also noticeably missing from the Opposition’s live public discussion on May 26.

BVI News reached out to the senior legislator to inquire about his absence, especially during the pandemic period where topical issues have heightened.

“I am not going to have any comments right now. I am not going to comment,” he told our news centre.

Vanterpool is well

In the most recent conference with members of the Opposition, our news centre asked Opposition Leader Marlon Penn the reason behind Vanterpool’s absence for that specific meeting.

He replied: “I spoke to Honourable Vanterpool today. He’s well. He’s doing well … He gave apologies that he wouldn’t be able to make the meeting but he’s doing well.”

While Vanterpool has been missing in action for the media conferences and public discussions, he has made appearances in the House of Assembly.

The most recent was at the 13th sitting on July 28 when he debated in favour of the territory undergoing a constitutional review. The Fourth District Representative also addressed a number of topical issues in the process.
