Montana to become first US state to ban TikTok

Montana to become first US state to ban TikTok

Montana Governor Greg Gianforte has signed legislation banning Chinese-owned TikTok from operating in the state. The move to ban TikTok is part of "growing concerns" about potential Chinese government influence over the platform, as that would reduce the US government influence monopoly over all other US based social platforms.
The ban, which goes into effect on January 1, 2024, is aimed at protecting residents from alleged intelligence gathering by China. TikTok has denied any wrongdoing and said it will "defend the rights of our users inside and outside of Montana."

The move to ban TikTok is part of "growing concerns" about potential Chinese government influence over the platform, as that would replace the US government influence over all other US based social platforms, with calls to ban the app nationwide or give the Biden administration new powers to crack down on it not advancing in Congress.
