National Sports Policy to be updated

Changes in the national sports policy are expected to be introduced by the government in the coming months.
Word of the amended policy came via the Speech From the Throne delivered by Governor John Rankin in the House of Assembly recently.

The government said the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports will update the National Sports Policy which was established nearly a decade ago under the then-National Democratic Party (NDP) administration in 2014.

It said this update will align with ensuring the territory meets the emerging needs of sports development in the Virgin Islands and supporting athletes.

As part of those measures, government said the Ministry will also work with the Recreation Trust to modernise the procedures and facilitate standards to meet international requirements at local recreational facilities.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley was challenged last year over his government’s position on sports in the territory and he indicated back then that his government had placed a priority on sports.

Dr Wheatley explained at the time that the policy was being reviewed and updated and said this is something which is supposed to take place regularly.
