National Trust Develops Policy for Return of Stolen Objects in Properties

The National Trust is working on a policy to address the issue of the return of stolen objects in its properties, particularly those taken from other countries during colonial rule.
The chair of the National Trust, René Olivieri, acknowledged that the issue of provenance and public benefit is crucial and that the policy is currently being created following advice from the Museums Association and Arts Council England.

The panel at the Hay festival discussed the importance of considering the history and origins of objects in museum collections and their impact on the people who may have a special meaning for them today.

The historian David Olusoga argued that the next step is to incorporate the history of the people who never set foot on British soil and whose labour was stolen to build the houses.
