New York City Becomes 1st US City To Impose $15 Congestion Toll

New York City has set a precedent as the first US city to approve a $15 congestion charge, aimed at reducing traffic and pollution in Manhattan by encouraging the use of public transport.
This decision, voted in favor of 11-1 by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), will affect drivers entering the busiest areas south of 60th Street. The measure seeks federal approval and requires toll collection systems to be established.

Different rates apply at day ($15 for cars, $24-$36 for trucks and sightseeing buses) and night, with additional charges for taxis and rideshare services.

Exemptions are made for emergency and disabled-passenger vehicles, with reduced fees for low-income residents within the zone.

The tolls, reminiscent of systems in London and Singapore, aim to generate over $1 billion annually for NYC's public transit improvements. This initiative has faced criticism and legal challenges from commuters.
