No Bail! Accused 'hitmen' in Daly’s murder remanded to HMP

No Bail! Accused 'hitmen' in Daly’s murder remanded to HMP

The four persons charged by police with the murder of businessman Matthew D. Daly, who was shot to death on September 10, 2020, have not been offered bail and were remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) in Balsam Ghut.

Detectives of the Major Crime Team on October 13, 2021, charged four men; Edward Crook, 29, and Dejshon Benjamin, 25, of East End, Micah Ormond, 36, of Sea Cows Bay, and K’Vawn Choucoutou, 26, of Cane Garden Bay with the murder after an extensive year-long investigation, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) stated.

Magistrate Khadeen Palmer told the men during their arraignment hearing this morning, Friday, October 15, 2021, that the matter of bail would not be entertained because of the type of crime.

The men, in addition, did not enter pleas because the matter is indictable.

Mr Matthew D. Daly's bullet-riddled body was found in Spring Ghut, Tortola on September 10, 2020.

Phone conversations

Director of Public Prosecutions Tiffany R. Scatliffe-Esprit told the court via a Zoom hearing that on the day of the incident, the men who were driving in different vehicles were seen on CCTV cameras, and their telephone conversations also incriminated them.

Police found conversations relating to ‘getting the fish’ and ‘setting up the fish’, and that was later confirmed to be the deceased.

She said the probe revealed that the men were hitmen, hired to eliminate Mr Daly, whose body was found in Spring Ghut, Tortola, on September 10, 2020.

The matter will continue on November 24, 2021.

All accused represented by different lawyers

Mrs Valerie Stephens-Gordon is representing Mr Ormond, Mr Michael Maduro is representing Mr Benjamin, Reynela Rawlins is representing Choucoutou, and Stephen R. Daniels is representing Mr Crook.

The DPP is leading this case on behalf of the Crown.
