‘No calling of early elections’ in VI – Premier Wheatley

Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has reiterated that there will be no calling of early elections under the Unity Government before its constitutionally due timeline of mid-2023.

Hon Wheatley made the statement during an update on reform and other developments in the VI on May 24, 2022.

“To be clear, there would be no calling of early elections and our work would primarily be dedicated to reform for the remainder of this term,” he said.

The Premier added that his Unity Government is fully prepared and committed to reform and to do this it will continue its ongoing and constructive engagement with the Governor and the United Kingdom.

Hon Wheatley made the statement during an Update on reform and other developments in the VI delivered on May 24, 2022.


More engagement with public to come


He said the hope is that the UK Government considers its course of action regarding the implementation of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) Report recommendations, “I do hope an official response will be communicated as soon as possible,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hon Wheatley also promised that the Unity Government will engage the public further on reform in the coming days to provide you with as much clarity as possible.

Former Premier, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) had commented that under the VIP Government there would be no early elections.
