No knowledge of alleged decision mandating teachers to take vaccine

Amid reports that local frontline workers - including school teachers and healthcare professionals - will be mandated to take the AstraZeneca vaccine for COVID-19, Premier Andrew Fahie has issued a statement saying the government has no such plans.
Talks about mandatory vaccines reportedly came from public servants inside the education ministry.

“Your elected government has no knowledge of this alleged decision being made of making vaccines mandatory for teachers and other frontline staff nor has your government approved such in Cabinet,” Fahie said in a post on social media site, Facebook on Wednesday.

He further said while his administration strongly encourages taking the vaccine, it “remains resolute, to date, to not make mandatory the taking of vaccines”.

“We have always stated that it is each person’s choice whether they want to be vaccinated or not,” Premier Fahie added.

As of June 7, more than 12,000 first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered in the territory so far. Of that number, nearly 7,000 persons have received their second dose.
