Nurse in Critical Condition After Stabbing at Royal Oldham Hospital
A shocking incident at the hospital prompts a police investigation and community response.
The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust is grappling with shock and sadness following the stabbing of a nurse at the Royal Oldham Hospital's Accident and Emergency department.
A male suspect, aged 37, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.
The harrowing incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, involving an assault with a bladed or sharp instrument that was not a knife.
The victim, a nurse in her 50s, sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Her injuries are being described as life-changing, and the Trust has prioritized support for her and her family as they navigate this ordeal.
Heather Caudle, Chief Nursing Officer at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, expressed deep concern, stating, 'We are incredibly shocked and saddened by last night’s incident, and our focus is on supporting the colleague involved and their family.
Our thoughts are also with colleagues and patients who were there at the time of the incident and for whom this has been distressing and frightening.'
The hospital, however, reassures the public that all services remain operational.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the suspect was apprehended at the scene and remains in custody.
There are no indications of further threats, and the force is not seeking additional suspects at this time.
Detective Sergeant Craig Roters underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, 'This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition.
Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues, and we will continue to support them throughout this investigation.'
The police have increased their presence in the area, aiming to both facilitate their inquiries and offer reassurance to the local community, urging residents to express any concerns directly to the officers on duty.
Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West, Chadderton, and Royton, condemned the attack as 'senseless,' expressing hopes for the nurse's recovery and extending his thoughts to her family.
As the investigation continues, it is anticipated that the incident will spark discussions on safety and security measures within hospital environments across the UK.
