Olaf Scholz to Run for German Chancellor Again in 2025
Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced his candidacy for the 2025 chancellor election. Despite the Social Democratic Party's poor results in recent elections, Scholz remains confident in his party's unity and determination to win. Internal polls suggest a preference for a new candidate, with widespread dissatisfaction in Scholz's leadership.
Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced his intention to run for chancellor again in 2025 during a media conference in Berlin.
Despite the Social Democratic Party's (SPD) poor performance in the European Parliament elections in June and a consistent low rating of around 14%, Scholz expressed confidence in his party's unity and determination to win the next federal election.
He intends to continue leading the SPD, which currently governs in coalition with the Greens and the Free Democratic Party.
However, internal party polls suggest that most SPD members believe a different candidate, such as Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, might improve their chances.
Recent surveys indicate widespread dissatisfaction with Scholz, with his approval rating at one of its lowest points since early 2022.
