Online work permit system only accepting new work permits

Online work permit system only accepting new work permits

Acting Labour Commissioner, Mrs. Michelle Mc Lean has said that the recently launched Online Work Permit System will only be accepting new work permit applications, effective immediately according to a Wednesday, December 15, 2021, press release.
“Originally, the Online Work Permit System was developed to accommodate new work permit applications, but due to the COVID-19 lockdown in July 2021, the decision was made to utilize the system for other types of work permit applications. However, due to technical and human resources challenges being experienced by both the Department of Labour and Workforce Development and the Immigration Department, a decision has been made to temporarily accept only new work permit applications online as this approach will significantly reduce wait time,” Mrs. Mc Lean said.

The Acting Labour Commissioner further indicated that the Department of Labour and Workforce Development has been working closely with the Department of Information Technology to ensure that applications for the other types of work permits are available on the Government’s website for employers and employees to print and complete.

To avoid delay, applicants are encouraged to contact 468-4707 or 468-4708 to make an appointment to facilitate the payment of the $50.00 application processing fee. For online new work permit applications, a copy of the “Dashboard” listing the work permit application(s) submitted should accompany the requisite payment. For convenience, a Drop Box has been installed on the 1st Floor of the Department to submit cheques payable to the “Accountant General” for the employers and employees desirous of submitting their processing fees without an appointment. A receipt will be available for collection within 48 hours of submission.

The Department of Labour and Workforce Development continues to support the implementation of technology to aid in the enforcement of the Virgin Islands Labour Laws, which will assist in effectively promoting good labour and management practices at workplaces to ensure stable and harmonious labour relations between employers and employees.
