Over 700 children benefit from D9 back-to-school initiative

More than 700 children from the Ninth District benefitted from a back-to-school initiative spearheaded by D9 Representative Vincent Wheatley to provide primary school students with school supplies for the upcoming academic year.
The District Representative partnered with several organisations and individuals including the Rotary Club and Allington ‘Gumption’ Creque to bring the initiative alive.

Wheatley noted it has been a while since the event happened, but he was grateful that children could come out and benefit from the initiative.

“It is two years since we had this event. Today I am so happy to partner with companies such as Tortola Concrete, James Todman, Nagico, the Family of Rotary, and Lions Club to make this event possible. It is a day when we celebrate our kids. It is a fun day for the kids,” Wheatley said.

Creque noted this was the beginning of what he hopes to be a territory-wide initiative for primary school children.

“We started in the Ninth District, and we plan to go to all districts where every student in the primary schools of the BVI can receive a backpack,” Creque said.

Meanwhile, a representative from the Road Town arm of the Rotary Club said one of the focuses of Rotary is literacy and education and the club has always aided with events surrounding education.

“This is what we are doing here in Virgin Gorda. We are happy to support Vincent and his endeavour here because education is the key for our children in the future. We also have different drives in Tortola, but we are here to support Vincent and his endeavour here in Virgin Gorda,” the representative said.
