Panic Shopping Ahead Of Tonight’s Gov't COVID-19 Update

While the Governor’s Office has dismissed claims of a dispute with him and the government on the length of a possible lockdown, shoppers appeared to be panic buying ahead of a key COVID-19 announcement scheduled for this evening, August 24.
As rumours spiral out of control over a possible lockdown due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, residents have lined the supermarkets.

At 9.00 pm, Health Minister, Hon. Carvin Malone will be providing an update on the COVID-19 situation but due to the rumours, HM Governor’s Office issued a bulletin, which stated that there is no dispute between the government and Governor Jaspert regarding the length of a possible lockdown.

It is being rumoured that the Governor is pushing for 28 days lockdown while the government is proposing a 14-day lockdown to help contain the spread of the virus.

Some residents have already rushed to social media to express concerns over any possible lockdown, citing further economic hardships, as they struggle to recover from the initial lockdown back in late March-April.

On Friday the government announced that there were nine new COVID-19 cases. This was two days following a new COVID-19 case which was not imported.

Also, over the weekend, there were reports of persons smuggling individuals into the Territory.

The Government later sent a press release indicating that they have ramped-up border patrol.
