Police investigating lewd & scandalous publication in circulation- CoP

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has said it is actively investigating the vile and scandalous publication that is being circulated on social media.

The lewd publication, which is in breach of local cybercrime laws, has sought to tarnish the reputation of several elected representatives of Government as well as officials of the BVI Health Services Authority and the House of Assembly.

“We have received reports and we are trying to ascertain the person that posted it,” Commissioner of Police Mark Collins told our newsroom today, February 9, 2022.

Police Media Liaison Diane L. Drayton also confirmed that police had received reports of the offensive publication.

“The RVIPF is aware of this publication. Investigations are presently active in matter,” Drayton said.

Honestly Speaker Radio Talk Show host, Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called on persons in the Virgin Islands to condemn a publication, which he labeled as willful and scandalous misinformation circulated about elected and other local officials.

Commissioner of Police (CoP) Mark Collins said the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has received reports of the scandalous publication in circulation and 'we are trying to ascertain the person that posted it'.


Cybercrime laws could come into play


Under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime (Amendment) Act, 2019, persons who are found guilty of electronic defamation could be fined up to $100,000 or face a maximum of three years in prison or both.

Persons could also be fined for sharing certain offensive materials electronically.

The lewd publication, which is in breach of local cybercrime laws, has sought to tarnish the reputation of several elected representatives of Government as well as officials of the BVI Health Services Authority and the House of Assembly.
