Today, we honour and celebrate your remarkable contribution, and express our deepest admiration for your unwavering commitment to your families and communities,” the message read.

Love & appreciation

Celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year, Mother's Day is set aside to show love and appreciation to mothers across the nation.

Though the celebration date varies in different parts of the world, the tributes remain the same.

The celebration originated in the United States in the 20th century by Anna Jarvis, who organised the first observance following her mother’s death in 1905.

Jarvis coined the celebration as a way of honouring the sacrifices made by mothers for their children.

On May 12, 1907, she held the first such memorial service in Grafton, West Virginia.

The observance has since spread across the world.
