Starmer is attending the United Nations General Assembly but allocated time for this significant meeting with the Republican presidential candidate.

Despite expressing his intent to also meet Democratic candidate Vice-President Kamala Harris, Starmer will not meet her on this trip due to scheduling conflicts.

Harris remains in Washington for talks with President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Starmer emphasized the importance of personal relationships on the international stage, stating that knowing a counterpart personally is crucial.

He reassured that the UK's relationship with the US remains strong regardless of the election's outcome.
