'Quite an experience as Deputy Premier' - Hon Rymer -encouraged other Ministers to fully embrace the role when given the opportunity

Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) speaking on his recent stint as Deputy Premier of the Virgin Islands (VI) has called it 'quite an experience,' to be given the opportunity to perform in the role at such an early stage in his political career.

Speaking on the Tuesday, September 10, 2019, edition of the 'Honestly Speaking' radio show, Hon Rymer made the comments while congratulating the latest Deputy Premier, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) who took up the mantle on September 6, 2019, in a move that will see all government ministers serving in the role according to Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

"I've ended my stint as the Deputy premier just a few days ago, and it was quite an experience. I want to acknowledge and congratulate Hon Wheatley and his time as the Deputy Premier... He's gone straight into it, I'm sure he is the acting Premier as the Premier is away from the territory," Hon Rymer told host Claude O. Skelton-Cline and the ZBVI 780am listening audience.

In a move that was called unorthodox, Premier Fahie had said that each of his Minsters would serve in the post for a period of three months, then a permanent Deputy Premier would be named.

The Premier noted that his rationale for taking the approach was in part due to his unconventional leadership style in addition to him wanting all his Ministers to gain the experience.

Learning Experience

According to Hon Rymer, "It's a learning experience and I do applaud the Premier for his unconventional methods in terms of giving us the opportunity to fill that role at such an early stage in our Political career."

He pointed out that besides the Premier, all the other Ministers on the VIP slate are newcomers and as such, the experience was a welcoming one.

"It's quite an experience and I encourage all the other members, to embrace it and learn from it... its a role to play, but we always put the People first," Hon Rymer said.
