Record numbers of migrants cross Channel in 2024

In the first three months of 2024, the UK saw a record number of migrants arrive via the Channel, surpassing previous years with 4,644 arrivals.
This figure eclipses the prior record of 4,548 set in early 2022. Despite a decrease in arrivals in 2023, this year's numbers are significantly higher, marking a 23% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Amidst this surge, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reaffirms his commitment to halting these crossings, even as 2024's figures challenge his assertions.

The situation has been labeled a "migration emergency" by Downing Street, highlighted by a single-day peak of 514 arrivals. Additionally, legislative efforts to address this issue, such as the Rwanda Bill, face delays in Parliament.

Opposition voices criticize the effectiveness of the government's approach, arguing for more realistic solutions and safer legal pathways for asylum seekers.

The Home Office deems the rising crossings "unacceptable" and emphasizes expedited deportations, a stance met with criticism from refugees' advocates who argue for the necessity of safe and legal routes to asylum.
