Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to launch a smaller, more budget-friendly version of its iconic G-Class off-roader, anticipated to hit dealerships by late 2026 or early 2027. The new model, currently dubbed the 'G,' will preserve the classic aesthetic and exceptional off-road performance that have contributed to the G-Class's popularity, especially since the latest iteration was introduced in 2018. Mercedes had previously produced a shorter, three-door variant of the G-Class until its production ceased in 2011 due to insufficient demand.

Although further details about the new model are scarce, it is expected to maintain the unique design features that have made the G-Class a highly desired vehicle.

While the specifics regarding its powertrain remain vague, it is expected to offer electric, gasoline, and diesel options, potentially with a more straightforward electric system utilizing two motors—one for the front wheels and one for the rear—rather than the four-motor configuration found in the current electric G-Class.

Mercedes intends to ensure that the new model upholds its off-road capabilities, which might include a shortened ladder frame chassis akin to that of the larger G-Class.

For the gasoline and diesel versions, it is likely to be equipped with a transfer case featuring low-range gearing and three differential locks (center, rear, and front), thereby preserving its off-road credentials.

Even with the new model's smaller size and lower price point, it is designed to provide a more accessible entry into the G-Class lineup, with the goal of enhancing Mercedes' revenue within a competitive market where manufacturers from China continue to present significant challenges.
