PARIS: President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the French National Assembly and called for snap legislative elections after the far-right National Rally (RN) performed strongly in the EU elections.

The first round of elections will take place on June 30, with a second round on July 7.

Macron emphasized the significance of the decision as an act of confidence in the French people's ability to choose wisely.

The RN, led by Jordan Bardella, secured around 33 percent of the vote, doubling the margin gained by Macron's Renaissance party.

Macron expressed concern over the increasing far-right influence in Europe and warned of potential EU stagnation if this trend continues.

The results of these elections also serve as a critical indicator for the 2027 presidential elections, where Marine Le Pen from the RN is seen as a strong contender for the presidency.
