Minister Warns of Potential Russian Cyber Attacks on British Infrastructure
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, responsible for national security, is set to warn NATO allies about Russia's readiness to launch cyber attacks against the United Kingdom and other allied nations to undermine support for Ukraine.
Speaking at the NATO Cyber Defence Conference at Lancaster House in London, McFadden is expected to highlight the threat from Kremlin's cyber-warfare capabilities, specifically pointing out Russia's Unit 29155, accused of previous assaults in the UK and Europe.
He will discuss the potential for Russia to disrupt British businesses and power grids, labeling it a 'hidden war' against Ukraine.
McFadden will emphasize the dangers of cyber attacks being 'destabilising and debilitating,' and will describe Moscow as 'exceptionally aggressive and reckless' in its cyber approach.
He warns of the vulnerability of NATO states to Russian hacking groups, which are believed to have conducted at least nine cyber attacks on NATO nations.
These groups are thought to be linked to various cyber incidents, including attacks on UK councils in Middleborough, Salford, Portsmouth, and Tees.
McFadden claims these attacks are often perpetrated by 'unofficial hacktivists' aligned with the Kremlin, acting with impunity while not opposing Putin's interests.
