Sailor Rescued 24 Hours After Falling Overboard Near Australia
Man found 8 nautical miles off Newcastle coast after extensive search efforts
A sailor was rescued more than 24 hours after falling overboard from the Singapore-based bulk carrier, Double Delight, several nautical miles off the coast of Newcastle, Australia, north of Sydney.
The incident occurred late Thursday night, prompting a large-scale search operation involving two lifeboats, two helicopters, and an aircraft.
Despite initial overnight search efforts, the sailor remained undetected.
He was eventually found by recreational fishermen on Friday evening, 8 nautical miles from Newcastle shore, and was brought to safety by an ambulance service in Swansea, New South Wales.
The rescued man, in his 20s, was wearing a life jacket and was conscious but severely cold and exhausted when found.
He is currently receiving medical attention in a hospital.
Authorities are working to understand the circumstances of his fall, noting that the presence of a life jacket suggests the possibility of an intentional jump, though this remains unconfirmed.
