‘Send clear message’ to UK Minister we are not for Order in Council- Hon Malone

Minister of State for the Americas and Overseas Territories, Mr Alexander Jesse Norman of the United Kingdom (UK) will be in the Virgin Islands (VI) from tomorrow, October 27, 2022, until October 28, and Opposition Member Hon Carvin Malone (AL) believes it is an opportunity for the VI to let him know it is not in favour of the Order in Council to suspend the local constitution.

According to Hon Malone, the message should be that the Order in Council is removed ‘forthwith’.

Hon Malone was at the time a guest on JTV’s Big Story with Cathy O. Richards, discussing recent developments in the United Kingdom (UK), including the resignation of Mary Elizabeth Truss as UK Prime Minister after serving just forty-five (45) in office.

It was Truss who had appointed Norman to the post of Minister for Commonwealth and Overseas territories when we took up the seat as Prime Minister.

It was also Truss who was responsible for the Order in Council being put in ‘reserve’.

‘We must band together’- Hon Malone

“I think that we must, must, band together and we can send a message not only to the sitting government, but to the Governor [John J. Rankin] and to the Minister of Overseas Territories when he arrives here on Thursday…a clear precise and unequivocal message, they have to know that we know that we have work to do as it relates to governance and transparency and accountability.”

According to Hon Malone, the threat of suspension of the constitution via the Order in Council is not justified.

“To hold a guillotine, to empty two-thirds of the barrel and load the other third with bullets and play Russian roulette, it is not the way that we should do this, not in this century, not in this time, not in this space,” Hon Malone said.

Premier looks forward to engaging UK Minister

Meanwhile, at the continuation of the 7th Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said he was looking forward to engaging Minister Norman when he visits the Territory.

“Among other things, we will discuss the progress of reform and strengthening the economic resilience of the territory,” Dr Wheatley stated.
