Shuttle success! Nearly 150 taxis transporting over 200 people daily

Minister of Transportation, Kye Rymer has lauded the government’s taxi-stimulus, revealing that nearly 150 taxi operators are presently employed to provide shuttle service to people on the four main islands.
The value of the taxi stimulus is one million dollars and was part of the government’s COVID-19 stimulus package. It started in Road Town, Tortola and was extended to Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and Virgin Gorda.

According to Minister Rymer, there are about 115 taxi operators providing the free shuttle service in Road Town, 17 on Virgin Gorda, nine on Jost Van Dyke, and seven on Anegada.

“I get the calls from them (taxi operators) and they are quite thankful for this stimulus that this government has offered to them,” Rymer said.

Additionally, Rymer said an average of 200 persons use the free shuttle service in Road Town daily. He said the number of users signifies that the service is a success and noted that it will be continued in 2021.

The service is meant to reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

“Once we have the paid parking within the city, I expect to see more persons utilising this service,” Rymer said

The Road Town shuttle service provides travel to 41 locations/designated stops in and around Road Town free of charge from Monday to Friday from 6 am to 6 pm at 15-minute intervals.

It is one of the government programmes providing revenue for taxi operators across the territory that have lost business due to the closure of the BVI’s tourism industry earlier this year.
