Sky Betting & Gaming has been reprimanded for unlawfully sharing customer data with advertisers, without consent for seven weeks. The Information Commissioner's Office found no evidence of deliberate targeting of vulnerable gamblers. Sky Betting & Gaming quickly rectified the error and acknowledged the importance of data compliance.
The online gambling firm Sky Betting & Gaming has been reprimanded by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for unlawfully sharing users' personal data with advertising companies.
This misconduct was brought to light following a complaint from the campaign group Clean Up Gambling, which alleged the misuse of data to target vulnerable gamblers.
Although the ICO found no evidence of deliberate targeting of vulnerable individuals, it did find that Sky Betting & Gaming processed data without user consent over a seven-week period in early 2023.
The data was shared with advertising companies immediately without users' consent.
Sky Vegas, a brand under Sky Betting & Gaming, had previously been fined one million two hundred thousand pounds for a related issue.
Sky Betting & Gaming, part of Flutter, rectified the technical error quickly.
The ICO continues to urge companies to comply with data protection rules.
