Actor famed for his role as Adam Chance in the British soap Crossroads passed away at Sussex County Hospital with his wife at his side
Welsh actor Tony Adams has died at the age of 84, marking the passing of one of Britain’s enduring television stars.
Adams, born in Anglesey in December 1940, passed away at Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, with his wife Christine by his side.
Adams’ career spanned decades but he is perhaps best known for his portrayal of accountant Adam Chance in the long-running ITV soap opera Crossroads from 1978 to 1988. He went on to reprise the role in the show’s 2001 revival, and later made a cameo in the 2023 drama Nolly.
Before Crossroads, Adams made his name as Dr Neville Bywaters in the 1970s soap General Hospital and appeared in the 1973 Doctor Who serial The Green Death.
After his television career, Adams took to the stage, notably appearing as Grandpa Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium in 2004.
Colleagues and fans quickly paid tribute.
Producer Michael Rose described him as “an absolute joy” and pointed to his talents as an actor, dancer and singer.
Actor Augustus Prew, who portrayed Adams in Nolly, called him “a magical man”.
Outside the screen, Adams trained at the Italia Conti theatre school and nurtured a lifelong passion for sailing.
He leaves behind his wife Christine and a legacy of widely loved performances that spanned television and the stage.
