Some 20 persons permanently residing @ D. Orlando Smith Hospital- BVIHSA

Some 20 persons have made the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital their home, causing a strain on the purse of the BVI Health Services (BVIHSA).

This is according to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BVIHSA, Mr Moleto A. Smith Jr during a press conference on Thursday, November 24, 2022.

He shared with reporters that among the issues of low morale of staff and shortage of staff, there is the ever-present issue of finances.

An unforeseen expense is taking care of persons who have made the hospital their permanent home.

“Many don’t know that there are about 20 boarders here at the hospital, about 20 boarders. The hospital is not a nursing home but we now have to carry around the clock, 24 hours a day, care for individuals that should have been discharged,” Mr Smith said.

'Financially stretched'

He added, “So some of it is how we look at the continuum of services and some of it has to do with the formula, some of it has to do with the fact that internally we have to do some things and we are not. So I wouldn’t say were are in financial turmoil, I would say we are financially stretched and I would say that balancing the delivery of services with the revenues coming in has been an ongoing challenge for us even before this board.”

Smith also said the BVIHSA is actively working on a number of areas that require finances, including compensation for existing staff and attractive numeration packages for prospective staff.
