Some external cops already here! Narcotics specialists coming

An unspecified number of external police officers are already in the territory to assist the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) in investigating some of the crimes that have be happening locally.

Police Commissioner made that announcement during a recent joint press conference with National Security Council members Premier Andrew Fahie and Governor John Rankin.

He said these external cops are on short-term contracts.

“For obvious reasons, the number of specific officers I cannot share with you or indeed what they will be doing. But they will contribute to the fight against crime and particularly the fight against the drug trade and the violence they have brought to these shores,” the Commissioner said.

Specialists in the drug trade

There have been multiple murders and unexplained deaths since the start of the year and Commissioner Matthews said police believe they are connected to the drugs trade.

For that reason, the RVIPF is also “exploring specialist capabilities to tackle the threat” specifically as it relates to narcotics.

“I have every reason to believe that these efforts will start to quell the unease and reduce the violence associated with this trade,” the top cop said.

He told further told journalists that “a number of others” will be joining the Force “shortly”.

At that same press conference, Governor Rankin had indicated that considerations are being made to invite police officers from the United Kingdom (UK).
