South Korea's Brief Declaration of Martial Law

Implications and Restrictions Under Martial Law
In an unprecedented move, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law nationwide, the first such announcement in nearly 50 years.

However, this order was revoked within just six hours.

During this brief period, martial law would have implemented extensive controls, including a ban on all political activities, such as those within the National Assembly, local councils, and political parties.

Media across all platforms would have been subjected to strict oversight by the Martial Law Command.

Public protests, rallies, and strikes were to be completely prohibited, and any form of misinformation or attempts to disrupt the liberal democratic system would have been punishable under military law.

Medical personnel, including retired professionals, would have been required to return to service within 48 hours or face penalties.

Measures would also have been in place to minimize disruptions to daily life.

Violations of martial law orders would have resulted in arrest and punishment under Article 14 of the Martial Law Act.
