Strong comeback expected for Lobster Fest after 1-year hiatus

Strong comeback expected for Lobster Fest after 1-year hiatus

After being cancelled last year because of COVID-19, the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission (BVITBFC) expects a strong comeback for its ninth staging of the annual Anegada Lobster Festival to be held from November 26 to 28.
The Director of Tourism, Clive McCoy said there will be a wide range of activities and food available as Anegada welcomes visitors for the weekend.

“The Anegada Lobster Festival will kick off BVI Food Fête 2021. There will be 10 participating restaurants, live entertainment, exciting excursions, opportunities to win prizes and of course, tantalising lobster dishes. Our restaurants have gotten quite creative this year and will showcase dishes such as curried lobster, jerk lobster, lobster beignets, lobster fritters, lobster quesadilla, to name a few. One of the restaurants will even feature vanilla lobster ice-cream,” McCoy said.

“We are thrilled to welcome our residents and visitors back to Anegada and the BVI for this event. Our digital Anegada Lobster Festival Experience Guide contains all you need to know about the event including menus of participating restaurants, ferry schedules, an island map, health and safety protocols and fun activities. Persons attending the weekend event are encouraged to download the guide at this link before departing for Anegada.” he added.

In a press statement on Wednesday, the BVITBFC said the roster of activities for the annual BVI Food Fête is designed as a scavenger hunt that encourages attendees to explore various restaurants and attractions in Anegada and sample a wide range of dishes featuring the island’s renowned spiny lobster.

The event is produced by the BVITBFC and is sponsored by Roadtown Wholesale, CCT Global Communications, and Cape Air.

Earlier this month, the chairman of the Anegada Lobster Festival Carnel Clyne had revealed preparations for the event were coming along well and the main reason the event could go ahead was the conversation he had with industry partners.

He said they made a commitment to be responsible and observe COVID-19 protocols.

Clyne said industry partners, restaurants, rental companies, taxis and scooter rentals were all excited for the event as the island suffered a loss in revenue during the heights of the pandemic and the cancellation of the festival in 2020.

The chairman had said attendance projections are off the charts and basically every hotel room in Anegada was already booked out as well as rental cars and scooters.

Four different ferry companies are also making the trip to Anegada for the weekend – Road Town Fast Ferry, Romasco, Speedy’s and Anegada Express.

The Tourist Board hopes this will set the stage for a new BVI Food Fete event dubbed Jost Van Dyke Fish & Fungi Frenzy which is set for New Year’s Eve.

The event will have a similar format to Anegada Lobster Festival which encourages patrons to hop around to Jost Van Dyke’s restaurants and bars, sampling a variety of mouth-watering fish dishes while also exploring the beauty of what many locals describe as the ‘fete island’.
