Taxi & Livery being given greater powers; to become ‘body corporate’

Taxi & Livery being given greater powers; to become ‘body corporate’

The Cabinet is putting plans into action for the Taxi & Livery Commission to become its own stand-alone legal body.
At its September 21 meeting, Cabinet decided that the Road Traffic (Taxi & Livery Commission) Regulations, 1997 would be amended to afford the commission more power.

The amendment will see TLC obtaining the power to sue or be sued in its own corporate name. Also, the Commission will have the right to negotiate contracts in its own name and acquire any real or personal property for its constituted purpose.

Other privileges under the new amendment will see Taxi & Livery being able to have a common seal; regulate its procedures and business; and employ staff, as it sees necessary, to complete its functions.

The Taxi and Livery Commission is currently operating as an entity under the Ministry of Transportation Works & Utilities.

The changes come on the heels of several meetings with Taxi & Livery operators over the last couple of months.

The Ministry of Transportation has already issued ‘proper and adequate instructions to the Attorney General’s Chambers to make provisions for the new bill.
