The Home Jean Prouvé Designed for His Daughter Is Now Up for Sale

The Home Jean Prouvé Designed for His Daughter Is Now Up for Sale

The futuristic residence, built in 1962 and overlooking the commune of Saint-Die-des-Vosges in the French countryside, is asking €1,500,000.

In the forested Vosges Mountains, about 50 miles outside of Nancy, France, rests Maison du Docteur Gauthierขa striking two-level home that combines industrial and rustic design. The historic property dates back to the early 1960s when Jean Prouvé designed it for his daughter, Françoise, and her husband.

The 1962 home is located in Lorraine, France. Encompassed by the Vosges Mountains, it is just a short drive away the quaint town of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges.

Sporting signature marks of the self-taught architect and designer, the home is wrapped in striated aluminum and capped with a flat corrugated metal roof. Expansive windows punctuate its curved-edged metal sides, which complement the wooden panels overhanging from the structure’s roofline.

A long, paved driveway ascends up to the attached garage, which features a metal front facade, similar to the dwelling’s exterior.

"With its very refined, very plain lines, this villa constitutes the perfect summary of the designer’s ideas with regard to construction techniques," notes listing agent Gilles Larosée. "It is, apart from Prouvé’s own house in Nancy, one of his most personal architectural works, and is well-known throughout the world."

Nautical-style curved windows and doorways can be found throughout the two-level property.

Upon entry, a wide foyer leads to open living spaces on the upper level, which are subtly divided by U-shaped cross beams. In the central family room, a Prouvé trapezoid fireplace-original to the dwelling-pays homage to the designer while enhancing the space with a sleek yet cozy aesthetic.

Red hexagonal floor tiles flow out to the terrace, helping to blur the lines between inside and out.

"With the terra-cotta floor tiles and strip-pattern parquet ceiling, the spacious [family] room immediately brings to mind the idea of a welcoming, comfortable place to live," adds Larosée. A picture window spanning across the entire length of one of the walls frames picturesque views while also ushering ample natural light inside.

For the main family room, the architect designed a cast-iron fireplace much like the one he created for his personal residence in Nancy, France.

In total, the residence features five bedrooms, three of which are located at the opposite end of the living spaces. The lower level houses the additional bedrooms, along with a workshop and bathroom. Outside, a lush garden awaits, presenting a serene natural oasis surrounded by the thick forests. The open layout facilitates easy flow between the living spaces, catering to smooth entertaining.

On the opposite side of the fireplace is a spacious lounge area, complete with built-in furniture and shelving units original to the home.

A tall glass door provides direct access to one of the property’s many outdoor spaces.

A closer look at the exterior showcases the home’s corrugated metal roof and aluminum siding. "The striated aluminum walls on all four sides of the building give this villa the splendor of a piece of silverware in its verdant setting," notes Larosée.

The wide overhang of the roof serves as a generous sunshade for the terrace.
