This Striking West Hollywood Home Defies Its McMansion Neighbors

This Striking West Hollywood Home Defies Its McMansion Neighbors

The two-level dwelling by architect and owner Paul Harrison blends industrial and farmhouse vernaculars, and features a resort-like backyard with an ADU.

Now up for grabs in Los Angeles, California, is a striking contemporary offering nearly 2,500 square feet. The four-bedroom home was designed in 2017 by local architect Paul Harrison as his personal residence, and sits on a spacious corner lot near Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.

Crisp white fencing lines the perimeter of the home’s corner lot, creating a private escape in the middle of Los Angeles. The multilevel residence was designed and built in 2017 by local architect Paul Harrison, and offers 2,434 square feet of interior space.

"With this home, I wanted to create a property that stood out in a sea of contemporary look-alike McMansions," states Harrison. "I worked with a playful mix of modern industrial and French farmhouse styles to create a stylish, distinct structure." Nestled behind a row of thick hedges, the home extends a warm welcome immediately upon crossing the gated entrance, with native plants dotting the stone walkway leading to the front door.

A bright shade of red framing the door and windows pops against the home’s dark gray facade.

Inside, an open floor plan unites the loft-like living and dining areas, which blend effortlessly with the adjacent kitchen. Broad windows and sliding glass doors create an indoor/outdoor connection, while also allowing natural light and fresh breezes to flow through the main level. The home’s overall sense of space is further enhanced by the tongue-and-groove cedar ceilings, which soar at 12 feet high.

On the main floor, La Cantina sliding glass doors stretch across the entire rear wall, fostering seamless indoor/outdoor flow between the living areas and backyard.

Polished concrete floors run throughout the main level, complementing the tall, wood-clad ceilings with tongue-and-groove detail. The open kitchen boasts Italian lacquer cabinets.

On the upper level, the home features a bright and airy office space, in addition to the spacious bedrooms. While each of the bedrooms offer ensuite baths, the primary suite also presents a balcony which overlooks the glistening pool in the backyard. "I wanted the backyard to feel like an everyday vacation in the middle of the city," explains Harrison, "complete with a steam shower, sauna, plunge pool, spa, and water features."

A spacious, walk-in pantry is located off the kitchen.

A wood-and-metal staircase leads up to the second level.

Also located in the backyard is a one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) boasting an additional 620 square feet of living space. "I chose to include an ADU that works as a stand-alone unit or can be accessed by the main house as a way to increase square footage, allowing for multiple configurations to suit family needs," says Harrison. Complete with a separate entrance, the one-bedroom, one-bath structure can easily serve as a guest house or rental property. Scroll ahead to see more of the property, currently listed for $2,650,000.

A sun-filled office space awaits on the second level, where large windows frame tree-top views.

In total, the main house features three bedrooms-all of which come with ensuite baths.

Each of the four and a half bathrooms located in the main house is dressed in designer finishes. In addition to a double vanity, the primary bath also presents an oversize glass shower.

Tall tongue-and-groove ceilings continue into the primary suite, complete with a walk-in closet.

The resort-like pool and spa in the backyard features parachute canopies for shading.

Steps from the pool, a tiled outdoor shower sits next to the entrance of the attached ADU.

Inside, the 620-square-foot structure features a similar aesthetic to the main house, including high, vaulted ceilings, and custom lacquer cabinets found in the kitchen. A bedroom and bath are located on the unit’s second level.

Once the sun goes down, the backyard presents a luminous setting for entertaining.
