Conservative party leadership candidates Kemi Badenoch and James Cleverly have criticized promises by some rivals to leave the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Badenoch and Cleverly, both shadow cabinet members, argued that leaving the ECHR offers 'easy answers' rather than addressing deeper systemic issues.

Their comments came during campaign launches in central London, where Cleverly backed Badenoch's stance, emphasizing that the UK Supreme Court, not the ECHR, stopped flights deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Rivals, including Robert Jenrick, argue withdrawal from the ECHR is necessary to manage asylum seekers.

The leadership contest will see candidates narrowed down to five, or possibly four, following an initial vote on Wednesday.

The Conservative conference will begin on 29 September, where the final two candidates will be presented to party members.
