Traffic disruptions advisory notice – Baugher’s Bay Area

Traffic disruptions advisory notice – Baugher’s Bay Area

The Government of the Virgin Islands continues with its road rehabilitation projects which are being executed in collaboration with the Recovery and Development Agency. The latest project involves the restoration of the section of roadway in the vicinity of Qwomar Trading and above Bob’s Gas station which was undermined following the floods of 2017.
Motorists are advised that there will be substantial impact on traffic along Fort Hill as road rehabilitation and slope stabilisation works commence. Over the next couple months please traverse this area cautiously, comply with all traffic notices and rules and use alternate routes where possible.

During the execution of works which are expected to last approximately 4-6 months one-lane traffic will be maintained from Qwomar Road to the entrance to Bau Bau Jean Hill. The following traffic protocols will be instituted to manage traffic and protect motorists and pedestrians during works. These are clearly laid out in the attached google map representation.

1. One lane access will be maintained only for traffic heading in the eastward direction up Fort Hill and into Baugher’s Bay or to Belle Vue.

2. Traffic descending down Fort Hill will be redirected to Bau Bau Gene Hill into Baugher’s Bay.

3. Specific traffic diversions will be instated during the peak hours of 8:00 a.m.- 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m.

a. All traffic (vehicles coming from east or west) wishing to access Baugher’s Bay will be redirected through the Purcell Roundabout, up Fort Hill/Qwomar Road to Bau Bau Gene Hill and into Baugher’s Bay.

b. All traffic leaving Baugher’s Bay will enter the Blackburn Highway from two distinct points.

i. All traffic heading east will be directed through the exit that leads straight onto the Blackburn Highway

ii. All traffic heading west will be directed through the exit by Brewley’s Superette

4. During non-peak hours Baugher’s Bay can be accessed through these entrances but motorists are reminded to proceed with uttermost caution.

Traffic diversion signs and barriers have been erected in the following areas to assist in directing motorists:

1. Traffic barriers at located at the bottom of Bau Bau Gene Hill to prohibit motorists from ascending and at the top of Qwomar Road to prevent motorists from descending towards the site.

2. Signage indicating that motorists should make the left turn when heading down Fort Hill will be placed in the area below Bau Bau Gene Apartments and an additional sign will be placed further up in the vicinity of Macha Restaurant.

3. Signage indicating that the road is one lane only for motorists heading up Fort Hill will be placed at the base of Fort Hill in the vicinity of Qwomar Trading.

Motorists are asked to drive with extreme caution, follow road signs and follow the directions of the traffic wardens’ and officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

As the Ministry of Communications and Works and the Recovery and Development Agency partner to continue to carry out various road infrastructural works in the coming months, persons are asked to follow the Recovery and Development Agency’s Facebook and other social media pages @rdabvi or the Government of the Virgin Islands Facebook page at @BVIGovernment for more information.
