TRC working to ensure VI has ample communication services– Premier

Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has reminded that the local Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) is working to ensure the territory has ample communication services to supply the needs of the local economy.

“The TRC is also working to ensure that the Territory has digital communications technology that is needed in terms of speed and capacity, to support a modern economy,” Premier Fahie said in a Friday, June 25, 2021, statement.

He reminded that the local digital economy, as well as e-government services, hinges on the need for sufficient communications services and its availability.

“You would recall that your Government has already passed a suite of e-Government legislations that are in the process of being enacted, and once these come into place residents will be able to access the different services in Government online,” he said.

Premier Andrew A. Fahie said the TRC is working to ensure the VI has digital communications technology that is needed in terms of speed and capacity, to support a modern economy.

Some of those Bills include the Data Protection Bill 2019, the Electronic Filing Bill 2019, the Electronic Funds Transfer Bill 2019, Electronic Transactions Bill 2019 and the Archives and Records Management Act, 2010.

According to the Premier, as part of the Government’s full commitment to e-governance, persons will be able to access services from Jost van Dyke, Anegada or Virgin Gorda, or anywhere in the world regarding doing business with the Government of the Virgin Islands online.

“And again, I want to remind all residents that as your Government continues to push the throttle for taking the economy into overtime and creating opportunities to enhance your lives you must prepare and position yourself,” Hon Fahie said.

The leader of government business said more initiatives that are in the works that will generate opportunities in multiple sectors.
