The Rt Hon Amanda Milling, who is the Minister with responsibilities for the Overseas Territories, has accepted an invitation to visit the Virgin Islands soon according to Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon. Andrew Fahie.
Premier
Fahie's announcement of the visit was made on Friday, March 11, and comes as the Territory is anxiously awaiting the final report from the United Kingdom-appointed
Commission of Inquiry (
CoI) to probe allegations of corruption and other malpractices by Government officials, including senior public officers.
The report is expected next month.
Premier
Fahie indicated that when he attended the Joint Ministerial Council Meeting in London in November 2021, he extended an invitation to Minister Milling to visit the BVI.
"We followed up this invitation in writing. We are pleased that Minister Milling accepted our invitation and is expected to visit
the Virgin Islands in the near future. We look forward to this visit as it is an opportunity for us to have more fruitful discussions in a number of additional areas concerning development in
the Virgin Islands and how we can further strengthen the modern partnership in the best interests of the growth and aspirations of
the Virgin Islands people," Premier
Fahie stated.
Since taking up office in 2019, the Premier had been in a number of public spats with former Governor Augustus Jaspert on a number of issues. The Opposition has publicly stated that the public spat may have been one of the driving forces behind Mr. Jaspert imposing the
CoI on the BVI prior to his departure as Governor.
