UK Relatives of Motor Neurone Disease Patients Offered Genetic Testing

UK relatives of motor neurone disease patients are being offered genetic tests to assess their risk. Backed by Innovate UK, Sano Genetics provides this service to siblings and children of MND patients, with positive results offering counselling and clinical trial options. The initiative aims to expand genetic understanding and aid life planning for at-risk individuals.
Relatives of motor neurone disease (MND) patients in the UK are being offered genetic tests to determine if they are at risk for the neurological condition.

Sano Genetics, backed by Innovate UK with a £400,000 grant, is providing this service to the siblings and children of the estimated 5,000 MND patients in Britain.

Positive test results will offer individuals access to counselling, life-planning advice, and participation in clinical trials for symptom-reducing drugs.

Dr Paul Wicks, vice-president of neuroscience at Sano Genetics, emphasized the importance of genetic understanding in MND, noting that one in five cases are linked to genetics.

Participants will receive saliva tests for genetic analysis and, if found negative, can avoid lengthy NHS waiting lists.

This initiative aims to prepare at-risk individuals and expand the knowledge of the relationship between genetics and MND.

Eleanor Dalley, an MND patient, expresses concern for her daughter's genetic risk, underscoring the personal nature of such testing decisions.
